About service:
Support Dogs is a UK charity dedicated to training and providing specialist assistance dogs for people with autism, epilepsy and physical disabilities, helping them gain independence, confidence and improved quality of life. Founded in 1992, the charity works closely with individuals and families to match highly trained dogs with people whose daily lives can be significantly impacted by health conditions or disabilities.
The charity delivers three main programmes. Autism Assistance Dogs are trained to support children with autism, helping improve safety, reduce anxiety and encourage social engagement. These dogs can assist with preventing a child from bolting in public spaces, provide calming reassurance during moments of distress, and help families feel more confident when out in the community.
Seizure Alert Dogs are trained to detect subtle changes in scent or behaviour that can indicate an oncoming epileptic seizure. By alerting their owner in advance, these dogs give people time to reach a place of safety, take medication, or seek help. For many individuals with epilepsy, this early warning can be life-changing, reducing the risk of injury and increasing independence.
Disability Assistance Dogs support adults with physical disabilities by performing practical tasks such as opening and closing doors, retrieving dropped items, operating switches, and assisting with daily routines. This practical support can significantly reduce reliance on carers and enable people to live more independently in their own homes.
Support Dogs’ approach is highly personalised. Each dog undergoes extensive training tailored to the specific needs of its future owner, and the charity provides ongoing support throughout the partnership to ensure both the dog and handler thrive together. The dogs are trained using positive, reward-based methods and are carefully assessed to ensure suitability for assistance work.
The charity’s work is provided at no cost to recipients, relying on fundraising, donations and the dedication of volunteers and supporters. Through its specialist training programmes and long-term partnerships, Support Dogs helps people overcome daily challenges, build confidence and live fuller, more independent lives with the support of a trusted companion.
